Burnout is a pervasive problem in health care characterized by three sub scales: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and low personal accomplishment. 45% of all physicians report feeling burnt out. Over 40% of hospital nurses rank high when testing for job-related burnout.
This depleted state of mind can lead to: medical errors, high turnover of staff, early retirement and low patient satisfaction. It is also associated with longer patient recovery time post discharge. A pilot study suggests physical stress is directly linked to increased medical malpractice claims.
How we can help:
8-Week Mindfulness Class
MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) is a 8-week class designed to teach basic skills of how to integrate mindfulness into daily life.
Mindful Yoga (6 weeks)
Yoga provides both physical exercise and meditation. Yoga is recognized as a powerful intervention for stress management encouraging a shift from the sympathetic to the parasympathetic nervous system. Long recognized as a pathway to greater fitness and peace of mind, a mounting body of evidence points to yoga’s benefits.
Participants who complete the mindfulness class report:
Improved coping skills and less reactivity to daily stress
Decreased measures of burnout
A decrease in intensity of physical or psychological pain
Increased concentration
An easier time relaxing and a greater sense of peace of mind
A better sense of balance in the way they live their life
Less anxiety and worry in their lives and more enjoyment
